AI Agents for Business Automation
Vendors use “AI agent” for everything from a chatbot that answers FAQs to software that executes multi-step workflows across your business tools. The difference matters enormously when something goes wrong. This guide separates the three types, then compares the platforms in our directory on what they connect to, how they are supervised, and what they cost.

How to choose
- Know the three categories. A chatbot answers. A workflow automation moves data between apps on triggers you define. An agent plans and executes multi-step tasks with tool access, sometimes semi-autonomously. The risk rises with each step: a wrong answer wastes a minute; a wrong automated action emails a client.
- Prefer human approval on anything consequential. The platforms here differ in whether a person signs off before actions run. For email, payments, or anything customer-facing, approval steps are not optional. Each profile notes the oversight model we could verify.
- Map the data access before granting it. Connecting an agent to your inbox, CRM or files gives it read — and sometimes write — access to all of it. Grant the narrowest access that works, and check the profile's privacy note for where data goes.
- Price by what you will actually run. Automation platforms meter by tasks or executions; agent products meter by usage or seats. A cheap pilot can get expensive at volume. Verified pricing models are in the table; exact figures live on the vendor pages.
We do not run hands-on benchmarks of these products. Claims in this guide come from vendor documentation and pricing pages, with the limits and dates noted — anything we could not verify is not stated.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent?
A chatbot responds to messages. An agent takes actions — calling tools, reading data, executing steps toward a goal — sometimes across several systems. The distinction is agency: whether the software decides and acts, or only talks.
Are AI agents safe for small businesses?
With narrow permissions, human approval on consequential actions, and monitoring, yes — that is how the platforms here are designed to be used. The risk is granting broad access and treating output as infallible. Start with low-stakes workflows and expand as you observe behaviour.
How much do AI automation platforms cost?
Models vary: free tiers with execution caps, per-task metering, and per-seat subscriptions. The table shows each platform's verified pricing model; current figures are on the vendor's page, and costs scale with volume in ways that matter more than the sticker price.
