Best Free AI Tools for Students

Every tool below has a genuinely free plan — not a time-limited trial. What “free” includes varies a lot: some tools cap daily usage, some limit the best model to paid tiers, and some require an account with a specific provider. Each entry links to a full profile with the exact limits as of the date we checked them, and the vendor's own pricing page.

Pricing models and plan flags come from each vendor's own site, with the date we last checked them on the tool's profile. They change often — confirm on the official site before deciding.

How to choose

  • Check what the free plan actually includes. Many AI tools give free accounts a weaker model or a daily cap. The tool's profile lists what we could verify; the vendor's pricing page has the current numbers.
  • Think about what you are putting into it. Anything you paste — lecture notes, drafts, other people's writing — is processed on the vendor's servers. Read the privacy note on each profile before uploading anything sensitive or another person's work.
  • Use AI to understand, not to answer for you. These tools are strongest at explaining a concept you are stuck on, generating practice questions, or critiquing a draft you wrote. Submitting AI output as your own work breaks your institution's rules and teaches you nothing.
  • Check your institution's policy. Universities and schools have different rules on AI assistance. What counts as acceptable help varies; when in doubt, ask.

We do not run hands-on benchmarks of these products. Claims in this guide come from vendor documentation and pricing pages, with the limits and dates noted — anything we could not verify is not stated.

Frequently asked questions

Are free AI tools good enough for real work?

For studying, drafting and summarising, the free plans of the major assistants are genuinely useful. Where free tiers fall short is volume (daily caps), the best models (often paid-only) and file sizes. The limits on each tool's profile are the ones we could verify — check them before relying on a tool for coursework.

Is a free trial the same as a free plan?

No, and we keep them separate throughout this guide. A trial ends and starts charging; a free plan continues with limits. Tools whose only free option is a trial are not listed here.

Do these tools work without an account?

A few short-text tools do, but most require an account — which usually means an email address and, for the large providers, agreement to their data terms. Account requirements are listed on each tool's profile.
